Hudson Valley Hospital To Host Farmers Market

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - Hudson Valley Hospital Center (HVHC) will host monthly farmers markets through November, beginning July 31. The farmers markets are part of the hospital's "Seeds for Health" initiative, which brought an organic garden to the hospital campus, and is increasing emphasis on healthy eating.

“By offering this monthly series of farmer’s markets at our hospital we hope to encourage everyone to buy local, fresh produce and educate the community on how to maintain a nutritious, healthy diet” said John Federspiel, president of HVHC.

The markets will be held monthly on Tuesdays, beginning July 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the HVHC parking lot, 1980 Crompond Road (Rte. 202), Cortlandt Manor. The other dates are Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 30 and Nov. 20. Parking is free.

Produce and other goods will be available from Cortlandt-based Hemlock Hill Farm, which specializes in meats, Yorktown-based Hilltop Hanover Farm, Glynwood Farm of Cold Spring, N.Y., and Bracco Farms and W. Rogowski Farms of Pine Island, N.Y., and Continental Organics of New Windsor, N.Y.

Staff from HVHC’s Nutrition and Education departments will be on-hand with information about healthy eating. Master gardeners from Cornell University Cooperative Extension Westchester County will be available to answer questions about gardening issues.

"Seeds for Health" was inspired by “Think Pink, Live Green,” the brain-child of Dr. Marisa Weiss, president and founder of Breastcancer.org. Think Pink, Live Green stresses the importance of lifestyle changes, including healthier eating, as a way to help prevent breast cancer and improve the health of those already diagnosed with the disease.
