SOMERS, N.Y. -- Somers residents Richard Norbutt and Laura Polisky are looking to improve body and soul with the grand opening this month of a new karate/yoga studio in Somers.
Norbutt is set to head Triangle Way Karate while Polisky will manage Bija Yoga in the same studio at 155 Route 202 in the Lincolndale Village Plaza. The pair recently opened for business but they hope to host a grand opening later this month. Neither are new to their professions and have been practicing and teaching for several years in Somers and the surrounding areas. While they each looked at opening their own separate studios, combining them seemed to make the most sense, Norbutt said.
"It's a way for both of us to get what we want and for the community to get something without killing ourselves with the high cost of everything around here," Norbutt said. "We've been in the community a long time and we're a family-based school and we're extremely affordable and we're looking to pass along what we've been given."
Norbutt said he is bringing a unique three-point Okinawan Karate technique that he has always found to be the perfect balance in learning martial arts.
"My sensei taught components of three different styles and I want to make sure I honor that tradition to give students the complete experience," he said. "You see a lot of places going for the fighting aspect and I want to stay focused on the forms that are involved and the self defense aspect."
To that end, Norbutt is set to feature an abduction prevention seminar on July 19 in conjunction with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
"We're going to be teaching basic self-defense techniques that could be really useful, especially to children," Norbutt said. "It was really important for me to focus on that aspect of giving our children the skills they need and the focus of the art form as well as basic skills that could save their lives."
