Astorino Encourages Attendance At Social Services Forum

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino encourages religious leaders, representatives of businesses, day-care centers, and schools along with residents to attend an informational forum on Tuesday, hosted by Kevin M. McGuire, commissioner of the Department of Social Services (DSS).

The forum will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Fox Lane Middle School.

“Our commitment to protect our residents with a strong safety net has never wavered, but we can only help those who know about our programs,” Astorino said. “Thanks to smart management by Commissioner McGuire and the DSS team, we have made more direct aid available to those who need it, including an increase in day-care slots.”

The forum will help participants understand how DSS works. Representatives from various programs will be available to answer questions and explain how services are delivered to those who qualify.

“Many among the business, non-profit, and faith-based communities do not know what Social Services does,” McGuire said. “At this informational forum, the public will have an opportunity to learn about the services being offered to those in need.”

DSS is the county’s largest department, accounting for $543 million of the county’s annual budget. Programs include child welfare, child-support enforcement, veterans services, adult protective services, and temporary assistance.

Through DSS, the Westchester-Putnam Workforce Investment Board operates One-Stop Employment Centers in Mount Vernon, Peekskill and White Plains.
