Tolland County resident Kris Coffey, age 43, of Coventry, was charged on Friday, April 7 following a lengthy investigation by the Connecticut State Police.
The investigation stemmed from an anonymous tip to the Department of Children and Family in early February, state police said.
State police said the tip revealed that a Tolland High School teacher had an inappropriate relationship with a high school student sometime in the 2014-2015 school year and a victim was identified and located.
The student said during an interview with state police that the two would hold hands, kiss, and that Coffey exposed his gentials, but she was sure the two did not have sex, a heavily redacted warrant said.
The two stayed in touch via personal email after the student left for college, and after Coffey had ended the relationship, the warrant said.
The student said in the interview she had trouble moving on from the relationship and was hurt when it ended.
During the course of the investigation, Coffey was interviewed and provided a confession to troopers regarding the "inapproaitate releationship," but did note admit to having sex with the student. He did admit to "fondling each other," the warrant said.
Coffey has been an English teacher at the school for about 15 years. He was taken into custody at his residence without incident and charged with three counts of sexual assasult.
He did not post the $150,000 court set bond and was transported to Hartford Corrections where he will be held.
Efforts to contact school officials were unsuccessful.
Coffey is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, April 10.
