The first Croton River Dam and Aqueduct were built between 1837 and 1842. A National Registered Landmark, the orginal dam is under reservoir waters in Yorktown.

The new Croton Dam was started in 1892 and completed in 1906. Hundreds of Italian and Irish immigrants moved to the area to work on the new dam with one ethnic group on one side of the river and the other on the other side. The worker camps are gone, but the new dam remains a symbol of 19th-century optimism, and today it is a much appreciated value and scenic spot.
