Harckham resigned earlier this month to take a post in state government.

Cole is a retired IBM software engineer with 34 years of experience with the company's research department.

“I have been active in government and politics for more than twenty five years and filling this seat is an honor that tops all of those activities,” Cole said in a statement. “I am grateful for this opportunity and am confident that I will hit the ground running to give the residents of northern Westchester a place to go to voice their concerns and have an avenue of advocacy at the county level.”

“Legislator Cole has done an admirable job of getting up to speed on a number of important issues currently before the Board. His constituents should know that they have an excellent representative at the Board of Legislators," Board of Legislators Chairman Michael Kaplowitz added.

Cole will finish out the rest of Harckham's term until the winner of this fall's election is certified, which will happen before the end of the year. The election winner will then begin a full term in January.

Harckham's resignation was effective June 1. Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed him assistant director of the state Office of Community Renewal.
