Somers Library Fills July Calendar With Teen Events

KATONAH, N.Y. -- Somers Library has announced its series of events for teens and tweens entering sixth through 12th grades.

The Teen Interactive Movie Sessions runs on Tuesdays with the following films and themed activities:

  • July 7 - "Ghostbusters" (1984); 105 min. (PG): Dance to the movie's theme song, eat marshmallows and more. 
  • July 14 - "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014); 122 min.(PG-13): Wear a Drax mask, shout "I am Groot!" and more. 
  • July 28 - "Jumanji" (1995); 104 min.(PG): Drink "monkey juice" and stamp along to the stampede scene and more.
  • August 4 - "The Wizard of Oz" (1939); 102 min. (G): Blow bubbles, play the "Wicked Witch" song on a kazoo and more.

Performance artist Jay Mankita will give the Foot Percussion for Young Adults Presentation on July 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. for kids entering 5th grade and higher. Participants will build percussive instruments that can be played with their feet and learn basic rhythms. Attendees are asked to bring pots, pans, rubber bands, velcro, broken musical gear and other items that make noise. Do not bring rusty metal or anything with splinters, sharp edges or toxic chemicals.

Denise Nobile, an English language arts teacher at the Somers Middle School, will give four sessions for the Summer Yoga and Mindfulness for Teens and Tweens program on July 9, 16, 23 and 30. Participants will learn how to slow down and increase their internal and external awareness, use breathing to calm during challenging times, feel energetic and balance and more. All participants are required to bring a yoga mat to class.
