Somers Republican Club Honors Benedict At Scholarship Dinner

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Somers Republican Club will honor Richard Benedict at its annual Scholarship Dinner on Monday, June 1.

The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Mama Rosa Restaurant, 254 Route 100, Somers, NY.

Benedict, a Somers resident of 17 years, is recognized for his distinguished community services to the Town of Somers and the community of Heritage Hills.

As the President of the Heritage Hills Society, Inc., he has managed the organization with dedication and devotion. His effective supervision of the budget, staff and contractors has made Heritage Hills one of the best communities in New York.

During his tenure as President of the Heritage Hills Society, he has built a new fitness center and acquired the Lake Lodge property for community use. With his wealth of knowledge and energy he has taken on many issues, such as water, cable, roads, Hurricane Sandy, etc with the private entities, the Town and the State on behalf of the Heritage Hills residents.

Benedict, a special Ed teacher of 34 years at Mount Pleasant Cottage School and a state trooper of seven years assigned on Palisades Interstate Parkway, is an avid volunteer. He was elected to serve on the Somers Town Council on the remaining term of a council seat left by a member due to health reasons.

With his rich knowledge of town issues, he helped the town board resolve many problems. He brought his management experience to the Town Council and helped the Town formulate an emergency shelter plan. When he completed his term, Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy praised his contribution and proclaimed Dec. 31, 2012 as Richard Benedict Day in the Town of Somers.   Somers Republican Club is a non-profit organization in Somers. It holds a number of events during the year. The Scholarship Dinner ($65 per person) raises scholarship funds for Somers High School Seniors.
