Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m., with an opening ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. followed by the walk. Last year's walk was held at White Plains High School.

Neil Klar, the co-chair of the committee, became involved with fighting Alzheimer's after his mother-in-law battled the disease for 10 years and his mother suffered from dementia for two years.

Cindy Shmerler, the other co-chair, became involved when her mother died of Alzheimer's.

“When I found my mother’s slipper in the refrigerator many years ago, I laughed nervously,” said Shmerler. “When she failed to recognize my father and me, I cried. And when she passed away from the ravages of Alzheimer’s, I got mad. Ever since then I have dedicated myself to helping find a cure so that other families don’t have to suffer as ours did.”

The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s disease kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

Last year, the Hudson Valley Chapter’s five walks raised more than $1 million. To learn more about the Westchester Walk, visit WestchesterWalk.org.
