The modern sandwich is believed to be named for John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, but the circumstances of the sandwich's invention is cloudy, according to National Day Calendar

One widely-held legend is that Montagu hated to leave the gambling table in order to have a meal. Instead, he had his servants bring him pieces of meat between pieces of bread. Other players at the table began to place the same order by saying "I'll have the same as sandwich," National Day Calendar said.

Other theories paint Montagu pursuing more noble efforts, like dedicating so much time to the navy, politics and the arts that he had to eat at his desk, National Day Calendar said.
