What To Do In Somers This Weekend

SOMERS, N.Y. – Events to keep you busy during the chilly winter days are some of this weekend’s features in the Somers area.

Friday, Jan. 18

Fundamentals of Charcoal Drawing: 12:30 p.m. Artist Mark Cassata is teaching a four-week workshop for adults at the Somers Library about creating art with charcoal. This is the third class. The final class will be held on Jan. 25. It’s at the Somers Library, 82 Primrose St., Somers. To register call 914-232-5717. You will receive a list of required supplies.

Gaming Club: 3 to 4:30 p.m. Join other young adults to play games on the Nintendo Wii or card games. The club is always open to new members. It is intended for middle and high school students. It’s at the Somers Library, 82 Primrose St., Somers.

Quiver, Quaver: 1:30 to 4 p.m. A two-part workshop and lecture about essential tremor, a neurological disorder that causes hands to shake, heads to bob and voices to quaver. The first part will center on tai chi instruction with expert George Chen. The second part will be a discussion among those who attend with a Q&A session. There is no charge but a $10 donation is requested for the tai chi session. It’s at the Somers Library, 82 Primrose St., Somers.

Saturday, Jan. 19

Live Music on Lovell Street: 9:30 p.m. Andrea & The Armenian Rugriders perform at the Lovell Street Grill and Alehouse, 152 Route 202, Lincolndale.

Zumba: 9:30 a.m. Party yourself into shape at a Zumba Fitness class. It’s only $5 per class and there is no contract commitment. For more information call Donna at 914-523-2893 or visit the website. Classes are at the Somers Community Center, 34 Hillandale Drive, Shenorock.

Beaded Earring Workshop: 1 to 3:30 p.m. Create your own beaded earrings. With each pair you make for yourself, you will make a second pair to be donated to the local women’s shelters. There is no charge for the workshop, which is intended for people from sixth grade through adulthood. It’s at the Somers Library,  82 Primrose St., Somers.

Learn to Knit: 1 to 3 p.m. If you would like to brush up on your old skills or you are a beginner, you can learn the basics from a knitting professional. The workshop is free but there is a small fee for supplies. It’s for ages eight and all the way up. Registration is required, so call 914-864-7286. It’s at Muscoot Farm, Route 100, 1½ miles south of Route 35 in Somers.

Sunday, Jan. 20

Somers Land Trust Annual Meeting: 2 p.m. At this year's meeting Girl Scout Gold Star winner Shannon Longworth will speak on her Memory Forest project at the Angle Fly Preserve. Her mentor, Forester Brendan Murphy will also speak. The meeting takes place at the Somers Town House, 335 Route 202, Somers.
