Carmel Civic Association To Ring In Holidays With Parade, Tree Lighting

CARMEL, N.Y. -- Some traditions just seem to officially ring in the holiday season, and for Carmel the Hamlet Civic Association's Holiday on the Lake Parade and Tree Lighting has become such an event.

"We've been doing this for 22 years, and It's a time for the community to come together, and spread holiday cheer," said Jennifer Dougherty of the Holiday on the Lake Committee. "Kids and families love all the activities - it's a holiday highlight of the season for the county, full of home town charm."

This year's celebration is set for Saturday, December 3, and includes events throughout the day at various locations, with a 7:30 p.m. caroling and tree lighting on Lake Gleneida capping the day.

Events begin at 9 a.m. at the Carmel Firehouse, with a pancake breakfast, photos with Santa, and holiday crafts.

Reed Memorial Library will host crafts, a magic show, a Santa visit and a singalong from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Knights of Columbus Hall will host family activities from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Cornerstone Park will have caroling, hay rides, snacks and a community tree lighting from 4:00 to 5:30.

Live music is set for the steps of the historic County Courthouse from 5:30 to 6:30, a Santa Stroll is set for 6:15 p.m., and a holiday blessing and the Parade of Lights - with more than 40 community groups and floats - is set for 6:30 p.m.

Holiday bazaars, craft fairs and other events will run throughout the day as well at St. James School, Drew Methodist Church and VFW Memorial Hall.

A Hanukah lighting festival is set for December 27, the third night of Hanukah, with the Menorah lighting on the shore of Lake Gleneida at 5 p.m.
