Flu Shots Coming to Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. -- The Somers Nutrition Center will be offering a flu clinic for area residents on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Van Tassell House, 98 Route 139, Somers.

There will be no fee for people with Medicare Part B insurance. You must bring your Medicare card with you. There will be a $20 fee for those with insurance other than Medicare.

The single best protection against the flu is the vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It takes up to two weeks for the body to develop immunity, so the sooner you get the inoculation, the better. It lasts about a year and is adjusted annually according to the prevailing strains of flu each season.

Good basic health habits, like washing your hands and covering your mouth during a cough or sneeze, are also important in preventing the spread of the flu.

More people die each year from influenza than from all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined, says the CDC. An average of 36,000 people nationwide die each year from influenza-related complications.

To schedule an appointment for this year’s flu shot on Oct. 4 call 914-232-0807.

Flu shots are also available weekdays at the Somers Towne Centre CVS.
