A diagnosis of pre-diabetes, which can be indicated by higher-than-normal blood sugar, signifies to patients that they are at high risk for developing diabetes. There are several reasons why someone might develop Type 2 diabetes. Risks can be genetic and environmental. Environmental factors such as weight and activity can be modified.
Patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes have an opportunity to make lifestyle changes that can reverse their diagnosis. Without those changes, they are likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes within 10 years.
"Research shows with an improvement in your diet and with an increase in activity, which results in weight loss and better nutrition, Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed." says NWH registered Dietitian Pat Talio.
