Uber has started an advertising campaign in Westchester County, promoting the increasingly popular national service to local residents in an effort to drum up support for an expansion into the area, where some officials have considered banning ride hailing services.
The advertising campaign has included multiple radio spots, television commercials and email blasts to residents that have the service’s app on their phones. A company official also published a piece on lohud.
The Westchester County Board of Legislators is scheduled to vote on opting out of legislature allowing them to ban ride hailing this week.
State Sen. George Latimer called on Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino to not ban ride-sharing companies, in a statement issued on Monday and for a “balanced, three-pronged approach to ensure ride sharing benefits Westchester County residents.”
Latimer, who received the Democratic Party's endorsement for the 2017 county exec race, said that after he spoke with hundreds of residents “with diverse opinions, it’s clear that (Westchester) needs a practical, pragmatic approach to the sharing economy.”
"These companies operate practically everywhere else in America. New York State is the last place to embrace them, which gives counties like ours the chance to take a balanced approach rather than simply trying to pretend that services like this don't exist or regulate them out of existence."
