A Day Of Fun At Somers' Independence Day

SOMERS, N.Y. – Once again Somers’ annual Independence Day celebration drew more than 1,000 people, beginning at 8 a.m. with the Lynn Adams Memorial Run/Walk Marathon and continuing throughout the day to the finale – the fireworks extravaganza at nightfall.

More than 300 contestants entered the Lynn Adams event, said organizer Sarena Meyer. “There were a lot of good runners and walkers. The winning girl was Samantha Kuntz and the winning boy was Ryan Matsumoto." The event raised around $3,000, she added.

Richard Bridgham, organizer of this year’s new event, the Family Challenge, reported a “big success. We’ll definitely do it again next year. There were four teams, each one with 12 people, and ten events. Every team won two or three events, but the overall winners were the ‘Rock and Roll Thunder’ team. It was made up of the Pietrangolare, King and Daly families.”

The winners of the Lions Club car raffle were Terence Hughes, Jim Keane and Joe “Tin” Honigsberg, three guys from Mahopac, who chipped in for a ticket. The winners have a choice of taking the automobile prize, a red Camaro convertible, or $35,000 in cash. The raffle grossed close to $90,000. The net proceeds will be divided among a few charities, including Friends of Karen and Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
