Former Somers Broker, Russell Crawford Dies at 92

SOMERS, N.Y. - Russell George Crawford, Sr., of Somers, died Dec. 13 at the age of 92. A funeral service will be held on Jan. 14 in Croton Falls.

Born in Yonkers on Mar. 7, 1919, he was the son of the late George Thomas Crawford and Louisa Hillenbrand Crawford. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers and then the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1944. After graduation, Crawford served World War II, aboard multiple ships and in all theaters of the war.

As a young man, Crawford began a career at the Royal Globe Insurance Company. In 1960, Crawford and his wife Priscilla established Harness Brokerage in Somers, the first specialty insurance agency devoted solely to the insurance of standard bred horses. He was a lifelong athlete and sportsman.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Priscilla J. Crawford, his daughters Druscilla Crawford Herbert of Fallston, Md. and Maureen E. Crawford of Somers, his son Russell G. Crawford, Jr. of Rye, his sister Muriel Crawford Fitzek and six grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Croton Falls on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Crawford's name to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090 or My Second Home, 95 Radio Circle, Mt. Kisco, NY 10549.
