SOMERS, N.Y. – More than a thousand people lined Route 100 on Thursday to pay their respects to Newtown shooting victim Anne Marie Murphy of Somers.

A funeral mass for Murphy was celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Katonah. Afterward, the funeral cortege proceeded from the church along Route 100 to the interment site at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Somers.

Murphy, a special education teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School, was killed trying to shield her students from the attacker.

The 52-year-old mother of four attended St. Mary’s School in Katonah and graduated from Kennedy Catholic High School. She was the daughter and sister of Drs. Hugh and Thomas McGowan, who practice dentistry in Katonah.
