SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – To build a robot, all these kids need are some Lego pieces and ingenuity.
Sleepy Hollow Middle School Robotics Competition
Middle school students from around the Hudson Valley competed Saturday in the fifth annual Hudson Valley First Lego League Tournament at Sleepy Hollow Middle School. Students were asked to find solutions for senior citizens.
“They had to figure out what are some of the problems people face as they become seniors — and then how can we address some of these problems?” Sleepy Hollow High School Science Department Chair Jason Choi said. “They have to do a series of chores or tasks in place of seniors, such as picking up prescriptions, picking up the right prescriptions or gardening.”
Students' robots had just a few minutes to complete as many tasks as they could, grabbing points along the way. Teams also were so judged on presentations, core values and team spirit. Each robotics team was given the same “brains,” meaning teams had to use Lego pieces so their robot could pick things up or move.
Participating students included several school and community groups from Westchester: Tuckahoe, Peekskill, Chappaqua, Sleepy Hollow, New Rochelle, Dobbs Ferry, Somers, Rye, Ossining and Yorktown Heights. Sleepy Hollow High School students and teachers volunteers their time Saturday to run the event.
