Somers: Get Your Licks On Route 6

SOMERS, N.Y. – North Salem residents Ginny and Ken Ryan are celebrating the grand opening of Fro-Yo Fusion, their new frozen yogurt shop in Mahopac, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

You may recognize the Ryans as owners of Somers Custom Framing on Route 202 in Somers. “I admit that yogurt has nothing to do with framing,” said Ken Ryan, chief framer at the Somers shop, “but we have six kids. Frozen yogurt’s a good business, too, and it’s fun.”

Located in the heart of downtown Mahopac, the shop's space once housed a printer and then a framing shop, so it’s not quite so disconnected as it seems, Ryan said.

Fro-Yo Fusion actually got its start at the Brewster Sports Center. “The kids there loved it, but we had to rely on the arena for customers. There were no walk-ins,” Ryan said. “We couldn’t do self-serve there, either, because of the traffic flow. This place is bigger.”

The advantage to self-serve, Ryan explained, is “the customers have absolute control over how much they take and what they want on it. And it’s fun to put it all together.”

Another advantage is that people who are on restricted diets have control of their treats. You decide how much – or how little – you want, for example, and choose the nonfat yogurt or the regular. A sugar-free yogurt will be added soon. Toppings are carefully segregated, as well, for those with nut allergies.

There is yet another advantage to self-serve, added Ginny Ryan. “A while ago, we took our six kids into Mount Kisco for frozen yogurt. The bill came to $70! But at Fro-Yo we have two sizes of cup, to help you control the portion.”

There is also hard-frozen yogurt in individual cups, as well as hard-frozen cakes that can be decorated for special occasions.

Fro-Yo currently has seven flavors to choose from, with new flavors coming along in the future. Smoothies, shakes and coffee also are available. Toppings vary from candies and nuts to fresh cut fruit, replenished daily by Kobacker’s of Brewster.

Sunday’s grand opening will offer two-for-one servings, so bring your family and friends. The address is 606 Route 6 in Mahopac. The ribbon-cutting is at 2 p.m. The celebration continues until 4 p.m. Regular opening hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
