SOMERS, N.Y. The Somers Historical Society had the benefit of having four college students serving internships this summer, said Town Historian Doris Jane Smith as she introduced Madeline Zimmermann and Erika Panzarino of Somers and Gabriel Osorio of Ossining to the Town Board Thursday.
Smith described them as truly history detectives. The fourth intern, Jasmine Alfonso of Mahopac, was not able to attend the meeting.
They worked in the historical museum and in the archives for so many hours, uncovering artifacts, correspondence and books never before exhibited, and, in some instances, never even seen by the staff.
They consulted professionals from the West Point museum, Muscoot Farm, the Greater Hudson Heritage Network and many private individuals," Smith said. The interns created an exhibit that chronicles their discoveries and their ongoing research.
Smith cited the interns for the innovative and wonderful expertise they have put forth, and said, we wish them well with their academic pursuits. Theyre already talking about coming back over vacation time and next summer. Its amazing to watch them.
The interns exhibit, focused on the military, literary, agricultural and textile history of the area, is on display in the lobby of the Elephant Hotel.
