The 5K drew more than 500 walkers to Riverside Park to shine a light on the 12,000 infants and children who are diagnosed with cancer each year.

“Over $100,000 was raised by Sunday’s walk, with thousands more expected over the next several months,” said Cheryl Rosen of Scarsdale, PCF chairman of the board.

Purchase resident Bonnie Shyer, president of the board of directors, said the walk served a dual purpose of raising both awareness and funds to fight childhood cancers.

“More than 2,300 children will die each year from cancer, the causes of which are still unknown, and our funding helps critical research to attack this issue,” Shyer said.

The funds raised help children and youth from birth to 21 as well as those researching the disease in the medical field.

Special guests who participated in the ribbon-cutting included Miss New York Jamie Lynn Macchia and cancer survivors Soleidy Estevez, Dana Wershaw and Luke Weber. Macchia has made the Pediatric Cancer Foundation her platform.
