SOMERS, N.Y. Somers has a new community center thanks to the generosity of local resident Ron Cardillo.
It is the former Shenorock Club House, which has been completely renovated and refurbished.
The building was owned by the United Owners Association of Shenorock, but there were financial problems and it fell into disrepair.
My father and I used to drive past and talk about what a shame it was, said Cardillos daughter Donna Martone. He said it would be a great opportunity to do something for the community and he bought it.
The sale closed Dec. 31 and repairs began in January. There are two new bathrooms, a new kitchen, new flooring, a new HVAC system and a new stage. Even the landscaping has been refurbished.
It will be available as a rental venue for events like fundraisers, private parties and meetings. There will be some regular ongoing programs as well.
My parents love to dance, Martone said. Every Thursday night, when Ezio Pellitteri is at Le Fontane, they go to dinner and they dance.
Pellitteri is a popular pianist/accordionist who appears throughout the tri-state area.
Theyre usually the only ones on the dance floor. Theyre going to teach basic ballroom dancing at the community center twice a month. Well have Zumba classes, too.
The grand opening of the new Somers Community Center will take place the weekend of Aug. 25-26. Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy will be there at 2 p.m. Saturday to cut the ribbon.
Both afternoons, from 2-6 p.m., there will be fun and games for children, including magicians, clowns and inflatables. The evening hours, from 6-9 p.m. will have live music and a disc jockey. If you want to get started on your ballroom dancing, Pellitteri will be there too.
Various type of vendors, including restaurants and caterers, will have tables set up to show off their products. There is room for a few more, so anyone interested should contact Donna Martone at (914) 523-2893 or email@example.com
