Somers World War II Hero Laid to Rest

Dr. George A. Sirignano of Heritage Hills in Somers passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He was a graduate of Columbia College and the Long Island College of Medicine (Downstate Medical) and served in North Africa and Italy with the Army’s First Armored Division.

He earned both a Bronze Star, awarded for acts of bravery or unusual merit, and a Purple Heart, awarded to servicemen who have been wounded.

Discharged with the rank of Captain, Dr. Sirignano returned home to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Hospital Medical Board.

One of eight children born to Alfonso and Rosa Sirignano of Mount Vernon, he was the last surviving sibling. His wife, Helen, predeceased him in 2004.

Dr. Sirignano is survived by one son, George, and three daughters, Elissa, Gloria and Gina. Nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren also carry on the family tradition.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 5, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah (914) 232-3033.

Funeral Services will be on Monday, June 6 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 10 Croton Falls Road, Croton Falls. (914) 277-3765

A private cremation will follow.
