SOMERS, N.Y. He was known as "Berg" by some of his close friends, who described him as "larger than life," a special human being who lived life to the fullest.
More than 300 family and friends jammed into St. Luke's Church in Somers on Saturday afternoon for a memorial service for Alexander Bergman, 23, who died July 8 in a swimming pool accident at a friend's home in Ridgefield, Conn, touching off a search that lasted more than 24 hours.
A 2007 graduate of North Salem High School, where he played football and lacrosse, Bergman attended Boston College and was working at a pharmacy in Teaneck, N.J. During his college summers, he worked as a counselor at Summer Trails Day Camp in Somers and Camp Kiwi.
During his homily, the Rev. Sanford A. Key mentioned the outpouring of support that had been shown to the Bergman family.
"There is so much about Alex's death that we don't know or understand," Key said. "We simply don't have all the answers. There are three gifts that see us through: faith, hope and love. We hope that everyone in our darkest moment knows that God is there."
The first reading at the service was by Bergman's uncle, Craig Dietz, from the Book of Wisdom, which stated, in part, "The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God, and no torment will ever touch them." Cousin Derek Lupia did the second reading from the Book of John.
Bergman was the only son of Dale and Gail Bergman of Somers, who survive him. Also surviving are his grandfather, Calvin Dietz, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Donations in his memory may be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598.
