The meeting, entitled "Keeping Our Beaches Open: Water Quality and the Efforts to Save Long Island Sound,” will begin at 7:45 a.m. at the Nautilus Diner at 1240 West Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, according to a news release.
The event is scheduled to feature speakers Patrick Ferracane, of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; Thomas J. Lauro, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Facilities; Tom Anderson, New York Program and Communications Coordinator; and Richard Slingerland, village manager of Mamaroneck, according to the release.
The Village of Mamaroneck and Town of Mamaroneck "were found in violation of the acceptable fecal coliform levels by the EPA in 2010 (after testing rivers and the Sound)," according to the release. "Most of the problems are probably due to the aging sewers -- breaks, cracks, etc. -- and other piping; but this can also be caused by goose, raccoon & dog poop washing into the rivers/Sound as well as boaters not opting for the pump out stations."
