SOMERS, N.Y. – Leaf season has arrived in Somers and residents need to be aware that the town code places restrictions on when leaf blowers can be used.

Somers Building Inspector Efrem Citarella said the subject is covered under Chapter 123, “Noise,” which states: “It shall be unlawful to operate, cause to be operated or permit the operation of a leaf blower, chain saw, lawnmower or other gardening or landscaping equipment, which is powered by a combustion engine, after 8 p.m. in the evening or before 7 a.m. in the morning.”

Somers does not have a policy for leaf pickup. “People either compost their leaves, or maybe they use a leaf shredder, or they have a private gardener who takes care of it,” said Highway Superindendent Thomas Chiaverini.

“We’re not staffed to collect leaves, and we don’t have the proper equipment to take care of it,” he explained. “Everybody’s responsible for their own leaves.”
