A lockdown occurred at Mahopac High School and Mahopac Middle School on the first day of school Thursday. Police were looking for a suspect who had fled on foot, though they did not disclose further information.

Mahopac Schools Interim Superintendent Brian Monahan was informed by police about the incident at 9 a.m. and placed the buildings on lockdown. Students still were arriving to the elementary school and were allowed into that building before it was locked.

The lockdown was lifted when the police found the suspect.

"No matter how many times you practice it, every incident is different," Monahan said.

Monahan said today's event showed why it is important to run lockdown drills.

"There's a reason we practice these things," Monahan said. "We have to know what to do."

Monahan said the first day of school is usually challenging enough.

"Our staff handled it well," Monahan said. "There were a lot of calm adults. It's certainly not the way you want to begin the school year. Every first day is different, but this is one I'll remember."
