The candidates in the 18th Congressional District will be participating in a candidates forum sponsored by the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) at the Bedford Historical Society at 608 Old Post Road from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Joe Lombardi, Daily Voice's director of media Initiatives and managing editor, will be one of the moderators.
"We're really excited about this," Dan Hendrick, spokesman for the NYLCV said. "This is an opportunity from voters to find out where the candidates stand in their own words. It's what democracy is about. Environmental issues are significant in this district."
Hendrick said the 18th District is very interested in clean energy and clean water. Communities in the 18th District were hard hit by Hurricanes Sandy and Irene.
"Was the government response sufficient?" Hendrick said. "Voters need to think about that and how we can protect the district from future storms."
Other environmental issues include the proposed Spectra Algonquin pipeline, and whether the Nuclear Regulatory Commission should re-license Indian Point.
"There are also issues going on in Capitol Hill," Hendrick said. "Whoever gets elected will play an important role in limits on carbon pollution and carbon tax. There are a lot of issues at play."
Hendrick said the organization would not be making an endorsement. The NYLCV was pleased both candidates agreed to participate in the forum.
"It's fantastic," Hendrick said. "People get introduced to their representatives. It elevates the dialogue and voters get educated. Candidates get educated too. There are multiple benefits to this forum."
A similar forum was held two years ago when Maloney was opposing Hayworth, which Hendrick said was very lively.
"By just doing a forum on environmental issues, there;s less of this back and forth, he said she said," Hendrick said. "It's much more about what your views are and what your perspectives are on policy issues. We want to find out specifically where the candidates stand."
