The moose, described as being 7-feet and weighing 800 to 900 pounds, was spotted on the side of the road alongside the woods near eastbound Bear Mountain Parkway at about 10 a.m. on Sunday by Mike and Deb Pfeifer of Cortlandt Manor, who contacted Daily Voice.

"I saw it first and then Deb grabbed the camera," Mike Pfeifer said.

Moose sightings are extremely rare in southern New York. There are only an estimated 800 moose in the state, with most located far upstate near the Canadian and Vermont borders.

"We took a vacation up to Canada a couple of years ago with hopes of seeing a moose and didn't see one and to see going out to breakfast is really cool," Mike Pfeifer said.

Westchester County Police were called to scene and Pfeifer said he spotted an officer "following the moose around."

"I don't know how anyone who drove by then could have missed it," Pfeifer said. "It was closer to the road and then moved back farther away toward the woods."

Unlike deer, moose do not form herds and are solitary animals, adding to the likelihood this is the same moose was spotted in Ossining, Bedford and Millwood.

This marks the first moose sighting in Northern Westchester since September 2008 when a half-ton moose was killed after being hit by nine vehicles after wandering onto I-684 near Exit 6-A in Goldens Bridge in the early evening.

While most moose/car accidents result in fatalities, just one person suffered injuries in the pileup in which the female moose was killed.
