Roughly 8,000 customers remained without power at 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to New York State Electric and Gas reports.

SOMERS, N.Y. – Hurricane Sandy knocked out power for nearly 8,000 customers as of Tuesday morning, according to New York State Electric and Gas reports.

An estimated 7,864 out of 9,087 NYSEG customers in Somers were without power 9 a.m. Tuesday. It’s unclear when customers can expect power to return.

The National Weather Service has downgraded Sandy to a post-tropical cyclone, but the storm is still producing sustained winds up to 65 mph according to the NWS 5 a.m. update. A wind advisory is still in effect for Westchester County until 6 p.m. Tuesday. Weather officials said the brunt of the storm hit the area Monday night, but additional power outages could occur throughout Tuesday.

Update, 6:30 p.m. SOMERS, N.Y. – The number of residents without power in Somers remained steady Monday night, dropping slightly to 2,062, down from 2,137 outages around 1 p.m. NYSEG serves 9,087 customers in Somers.

Original Story, 1 p.m. SOMERS, N.Y. ? Thousands of Somers residents lost power late Monday afternoon as Hurricane Sandy blew into the area. New York State Electric and Gas reported that 3,285 of its 9,087 Somers customers were without power at 5:30 p.m.

Somers residents are urged to stay indoors for the duration of the storm. Those who have lost power can head to the shelter at Heritage Hills Activity Center, which is open to all Somers residents. If you have an emergency, dial 911.

Town offices, schools and the Somers Library are closed on Tuesday. Somers Court was canceled Monday.

The Somers Nutrition Center is closed and there will be no home deliveries Monday.

A state of emergency has been declared. Residents are asked to stay off the roads. The town is prepared to pick up and distribute dry ice as soon as NYSEG determines it is safe to distribute. CVS Pharmacy in Mount Kisco is open 24/7 for emergency prescriptions. If a wire falls on your car, stay in the car.
