Local and state officials announced $13.5 million in grant funding has been pledged toward a rapid bus system running from White Plains to Port Chester. There will also be a bus service to replace the current Tappan Zee Express, which operates between the two counties over the bridge.

The funding comes as part of the latest phase of the Lower Hudson Transit Link, which is bringing new bus services to several Westchester municipalities. The new buses are expected to begin being rolled out next year.

The New York State Department of Transportation's plans include updated bus stations, double-decker buses and special bus-only lanes to help expedite cross-county travel.

According to the Department of Transportation, the Lower Hudson Transit Link is “guided by overarching goals with supporting objectives - developed by the Mass Transit Task Force between 2012 and 2014 - to address the need for improvements to transit service in the region.
