SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers residents are being urged to sign up for the town's "Code Red" emergency notification system as another hurricane-level storm heads toward the Northeast.

“All residents should go to www.somersny.com and click on “Code Red” to sign up to receive information during an emergency,” Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy said. Although the town has landline numbers for most residents, it is also wants to compile a list of cell phone numbers for emergencies.

The town has also formed an Emergency Preparedness Committee to keep residents informed of ways to get assistance during emergencies and ways they can help themselves. After last year’s storms, the town printed an advisory of steps for residents to take ahead of time.

Among other things, the list recommends families have a “Go-Bag” containing important papers, extra car and house keys, medications, a flashlight, batteries and other items in case they have to go to a shelter.

There are also suggestions on keeping food from spoiling and a check-list of things to keep on hand in case of a power failure. This includes a three-day supply of water (one gallon per person), pet supplies, tools, insect repellent and other items.

As another step toward preparedness, Murphy said, “If any organization would like a forum, please call my office at 914-277-3637 and we will arrange a date to come to your organization’s meeting.”

As for Hurricane Sandy, Murphy said, “We had a conference call with the County Emergency Operations Center and NYSEG this morning and we’ve met with the Internal Operations such as the Highway, Police and Parks & Recreations Departments.

“We’re getting ready for the worst, even it it doesn’t happen.”
