The scene in front of the historic Elephant Hotel was packed before a Christmas tree lighting took place. Some of the event's marquee guests included Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

This year, the lighting is the first for a new tree. Town Supervisor Rick Morrissey recalled how there have been three trees in recent years. The first, which lasted for many years, was replaced because it was dying, Morrissey explained. The second one, which was moved with help from the Somers Lions Club, lasted less than a year and succumbed due to the winter, he explained. Morrissey added that the third tree, which is the current one, was planted earlier this year and found in Pennsylvania by the Lions Club.

Bob MacGregor, a Somers Lions Club member, noted his group's support of an event where people could get their photos taken with Santa Claus. Doris Jane Smith, who is the town's historian and played Mrs. Claus, mentioned events that happened during the day, including a gingerbread-house display, a musical presentation held at the library and an exhibits of circus history and toys of the past.
