SOMERS, N.Y. -- The Somers Lions Club began its annual carnival on Wednesday evening at Fireman's Field. The carnival, which includes an array of rides, runs until Sunday.

Although there was cloudy and windy weather, Herb Reimann, who is chairman for the carnival, was pleased with the first day's turnout.

Reimann, who is also a first vice president for the Somers Lions, said that the carnival is an event where families come together. The carnival is the club's second biggest fundraising event, behind its car raffle that is connected to the local Independence Day celebration at Reis Park.

Reimann also noted what is upcoming at the carnival. Included will be the Somers High School Leos, which are fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and to help a child with a heart transplant. Among the costumed guests will be a lion, Spiderman, Captain America and Iron Man. There will also be a DJ playing on Saturday night.

Four-year-old Lianna Martone, Somers, was among the kids who showed up. She was excited to meet her friends and looked forward to the rides and cotton candy.

Serkan and Aysegul Badogu brought their daughters, 3-year-old Sena and 6-year-old Suheyla. A reason why the Somers parents, who are from Turkey, went the carnival was because of a children's day was also being held in their original country.

The carnival operates during the evenings until Friday night. It will open at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
