SOMERS, N.Y. Having spent 25 years in the entertainment industry, including a brief encounter with Michael Jackson, Somers resident David Vogel knows something about catching people's attention.
A huge fan of Star Wars as a youngster, Vogel, a nine-year resident of Baldwin Place, decided two years ago he wanted to bring some special effects to local businesses and help them captivate customers.
"I wanted to make a difference in the community beyond providing for my family," he said. "I wanted to bring Madison Avenue quality advertising to local businesses and make it affordable."
Vogel created Signpost Digital, a local advertising network that he said entertains and engages onlookers with a variety of content.
"So many business owners are so busy running their business they can't promote their business," he said. "I really want to make it feel like it's a component of their business."
One of Vogel's first clients was Peppino's Pizza in Baldwin Place. Vogel gave the pizzeria a 40 inch HD display that hangs between the ovens and the beverage refrigerators has paid off handsomely, according to Joe Mirabile, an employee and son of the owner.
"A lot of people notice it, the first thing people look at is that. It catches their attention," Mirabile said. "It's always a constant reminder and it brings in new customers."
Signpost Digital has hooked up more than a dozen local businesses and Vogel has branched out to the Somers School District to supply Somers Intermediate School, which his son attends, with the tools to keep parents and students in the loop.
"It gives you the engagement of TV at the right place, at the right time, to the right person," Vogel said. "We're all visual. We want to look at stuff. It's definitely catching on. You're going to see screens everywhere. It's a fraction of the cost of print advertising and it's more effective."
