SOMERS, N.Y. Tuesday is presidential primary day in New York. Although four candidates are on the Republican primary ballot, the favored winner locally of the nomination is Mitt Romney, according to Somers Republican leaders.
Jim Chisholm, chairperson of the Somers Republican Committee, said he is convinced Romney will win the presidential election against President Barack Obama. The economy hasnt turned around, he said. Obama said he would change things but he hasnt. I think itll be a close race, but Romney will win. Ive always been for Mitt.
Appearing with Romney formerly the governor of Massachusetts on the ballot Tuesday are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who recently dropped out of the race.
Republican Committee member Victoria Roach agreed with Chisholm that Romney is the frontrunner to face Obama and come out on top. Romneys chances are strong, she said. Obama has put us into debt. Were on a downward slope. The economy is not getting better. Housing is not getting better. The dollar is being devalued. Gas prices are up. Do you want me to continue?
Edward Sullivan, district leader of the Republican Committee, said, Its going to be way too close, but I think Romney has a 55 percent chance of winning. Its still early and certain things can happen in the country and globally.
The biggest pro for Romney is the state of the economy, Sullivan said. I dont know how we are still afloat. I come from a conservative point of view. Big government is not my answer. I am in charge of my own destiny and doom. I want less government intrusion in a free and consistent way.
I think the Democrats will vote for Obama and the Republicans will vote for Romney, he added. Its the Independent voters who will make the choice.
When asked about possible candidates for the vice presidential nomination, Sullivan said, We wont know until mid-July, at the earliest. Marco Rubio stands a good chance and maybe Chris Christie. Allen West is another possibility, he said of Rubio, the Florida Senator, Christie, governor of New Jersey, and West, a Florida Congress member.
