Morrissey read a letter from Jim Papa, chairman of the Somers Parks and Recreation Board, outlining interest from residents in a pool. Residents, headed by Linda Simpson, went to the Parks and Rec board’s meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 22, to talk about the possibility, Papa said in his letter.

“The Parks and Recreation Board unanimously voted to send this request to the Town Board for their consideration,” Papa wrote. “If the Town Board is of the opinion that there is enough interest in the town to explore the options for a town pool, then the Town Board could return this issue to the Parks and Recreation Board.

“We would begin by forming a committee comprised of Parks and Recreation Board members, interested citizens and Town Board members, to review past pool committee recommendations and suggestions for a future pool,” Papa continued.

However, Papa added a caveat, which he expressed to Simpson.

“... Given the current economic conditions, it may be a difficult issue for the Town Board to approve,” he said.

A website has been set up in favor of a Somers town pool. The website also gives an overview of the unsuccessful history in trying to build one. The site is available here.
