Somers Town Board Vacancy Filled

SOMERS, N.Y. – Richard Benedict , President of the Heritage Hills Society , has been selected by the Town Board to fill the seat of Harry Bolton, who retired unexpectedly because of ill health.

Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy said at Thursday night’s board meeting, “Many, many well-qualified individuals expressed interest and it was a somewhat difficult decision. I’d like to reiterate our appreciation to all of the candidates. I’ll be soliciting some of their expertise on other matters because they’ve shown the volunteer spirit and I think we should harness some of the resources they represent.”

Councilman Richard Clinchy said, “They saw the word volunteer and that’s what they did, with pure heart. I was very impressed with Mr. Benedict’s commitment to problem-solving and bipartisanship. There’s no doubt that his knowledge of town issues is impressive.”

Councilman Tom Garrity added, “Somers does have an abundance of talent for all of our boards. That’s why they function so well. Thank you to all of you who tried out.”

Murphy said that Benedict will serve out the remainder of Bolton’s term, which expires in December. A new board member will be chosen in November's election. Benedict could choose to run for election at that time.

But Benedict said, “I’m not thinking about running in November. Right now I just hope to help the other board members solve issues facing the town.”

Benedict, who is retired, spent seven years as a New York State Police officer, assigned to the Palisades Interstate Parkway. For 34 years he taught special education at Mount Pleasant Cottage School in Pleasantville.

During his tenure as president of the Heritage Hills Society, he has been involved in building the new fitness center, opening the Lake Lodge and managing the budget.

He has lived in Somers for 14 years and says the best thing about the town is its people. “We have a fabulous base in Somers,” he said. “People from all walks of life. They all contribute to developing the community.”

Benedict’s appointment is effective immediately.
