The town has begun using the Code Red notification system, which will allow the town to contact residents in the event of an emergency via their phones or email.
Somers Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy said the town increased funding for the program from $10,000 to almost $14,000 for additional services this year so the town won’t be restricted in the number or length of messages it can send out.
“We found that during the storm it was a great asset that folks were really appreciative of the fact they can get a little bit of information,” Murphy said. “We’re encouraging people to go to our website and sign up so we can reach them in an emergency.”
Examples of possible uses for the service include evacuation notices, bio-terrorism alerts, boil water notices and missing children reports.
Somers residents looking to use the system can go to the town of Somers website and follow the link on the homepage. Once on the Somers Code Red page, they will then have to create an account by entering their address, city, state and zip code.
Residents must then provide contact information for where they want to be reached in an emergency, including their email address and up to two phone numbers.
