Tips For Using New Yorktown Dog Park

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Yorktown’s new off-leash dog park’s official grand opening is just round the corner.

Off-leash parks are becoming popular with dog owners, as they provide an opportunity to let dogs out to play and meet new dog friends. Dog parks can be a great experience, but here are some helpful tips owners should know.

Often overlooked is the importance of exercising your dog before going to the dog park. A 15-minute structured walk before entering the park will help put your dog in a better state of mind before you let it off-leash to run around. Educate yourself on the signs of healthy play and dog body language. Owners should watch their dog and intervene if things start to escalate, before a scuffle breaks out.

Owners should be mindful of their dog’s interactions at the park. A little preparation can go a long way. Practice obedience commands such as “sit”, “down” and “come.”

Just as it is important to know what to do at the dog park, you should know what not to do. Owners are encouraged not to bring their dog to the park if they think their dog has a contagious illness. Do not introduce food and treats in the presence of a pack of dogs. Food is a common trigger for aggression. It is better to reward your dog with verbal and physical praise (petting) instead of food.

The Yorktown dog park is a great opportunity for residents and their dogs. An educated owner and well-trained, obedient dog will help make this experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
