Following the installation of an internal maintenance elevator and tower rooftops, the tower cranes were dismantled and removed from the westbound span, cleaning the way for the final driving surface, according to officials.
Two tower cranes remain on the eastbound side as work continues there. According to a News12 report, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the Rockland-bound span will be open for use in August, with traffic being diverted from the current bridge to the new, multi-billion dollar structure once finishing touches are put in place for the final roadway.
Crews from Tappan Zee Constructors continue to install steel sections and stay cables on the eastbound span. More than 70 of the bridge's 96 cables have been installed as of July 21.
