Westchester Cat Show Honors 25 Slain Cats From Yonkers

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The 39th annual Westchester Cat Show hopes many tristate-area residents will come out to the County Center and join in when the show presents its Cat of the Year Award, for the first time collectively and posthumously, at the Westchester County Center on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Westchester County Center is at 198 Central Ave., White Plains.

Twenty-five cats and kittens tragically and gruesomely killed in Yonkers in April will be remembered and recognized with the award for the good their passing has already achieved in a special ceremony on Saturday.

This criminal act, the worst animal cruelty incident in Westchester history, is still unsolved. All 25 cats were beaten, bagged and strung up on tree limbs. The cat show wants to honor the innocent “Yonkers 25” and bring light to a new awareness of the magnitude and effect of animal cruelty in local communities.

The Cat of the Year ceremony is at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and a memorial to the slain 25 will be on display at the show all weekend.

The cat show will also feature 200 cats and kittens of all breeds, the Meow Mart and the Feline Fashion Show. The show will run Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Feline Fashion Show will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Westchester Cat Show, presented by the nonprofit Westchester Feline Club, has donated upward of $100,000 from proceeds to animal welfare groups around Westchester and the tristate area throughout the past 38 years.

Tickets sold at the door will run as follows: adults $14; seniors $12; children (5-12) $6.
