FISHKILL, N.Y. -- An unidentified worker was killed Saturday afternoon during a construction accident at the Gap Distribution Center off Route 9 in Fishkill, according to authorities.

The accident, which occurred around 2:38 p.m., involved a steel beam crashing into the cab of a Komatsu excavator at the facility on Merritt Boulevard, state police said. The operator of the excavator was pronounced dead at the scene.

The machine operator's name is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin.

Members of the fire department, police department, and state police responded to the scene, which was the demolition site of the past structure fire.

The operator worked for Environmental Remediation Services Inc (ESRI) out of Syracuse, state police said. They were subcontracted by Clayco Contractors of Chicago, who have the contract for the demolition and rebuild. The company has been working at the Gap site since Nov. 16.
