James J. O’Keefe, 89, Of Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. - James J. O'Keefe of Somers died Sunday, March 16. He was 89.

O’Keefe was born May 14, 1924, in New York City, to James and Helen O'Keefe and was raised in Yonkers. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in World War II. He graduated from Manhattan College and pursued a career in sales, working in retail and the insurance industry. He then opened a real estate firm in Yonkers.

He served on many boards, including St. John's Riverside Hospital and The Hudson Valley National Bank. Additionally, he served as president of the Yonkers Board of Education, president of the Yonkers United Way and participated in numerous other organizations. For many years, he was a member of the Heritage Hills Golf Club. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph's RC Church in Somers.

O’Keefe is survived by his wife, Doris (Beairsto); children, Kathleen, Doreen O'Keefe McNamara, James, Don and Jack O'Keefe; and eight grandchildren.

Calling hours are Friday, March 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22 at St. Joseph's Church, 95 Plumbrook Road, Somers, N.Y., 10589. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
