Reading yesterday’s front page article regarding the latest in the federal housing settlement, I was completely taken aback by the comments of Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins.
Did he really say that the federal government didn’t overreach? That winning before the federal magistrate on the issue of forcing source of income provisions upon every landlord was not a victory?
Who does he represent: County taxpayers or Washington, D.C.. and the Department of Housing and Urban Development? Who does he speak for, the entire Board of Legislators, or himself?
Did he read the May 13, 2011, letter from HUD posted on the county website? Certainly every county resident should read that letter. In it, HUD lists pages of far-reaching demands and states in its own words it is seeking to “go beyond the terms of the Settlement” (see page 7 of the HUD letter).
When it comes to the housing settlement and dealing with the bureaucrats in Washington, we should be grateful that County Executive Rob Astorino is representing us and protecting our interests and that the Board of Legislators (who voted for the settlement) is not the final say.
