SOMERS, N.Y. -- A rapidly moving brush fire threatened homes on David Road in Somers and burned several acres before firefighters were able to put it out Wednesday, April 20, according to local firefighters.
The blaze started in a wooded area off Lovell Street and spread to within 50 feet of some of the homes, said Somers Fire Chief George Wahlers.
Wahlers said the blaze may have been started by a camp fire in the wooded area.
The National Weather Service had issued a Red Flag warning earlier this week.
A combination of low relative humidity, strong winds and warm temperatures can create conditions ideal for the sparking of brush fires, the weather service said.
People are being advised not to burn anything outdoors and to keep an eye out for accidental fires as well.
