Gas Shut Off After Main Breaks At Yorktown CVS

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Gas was shut off Friday night to a portion of the Commerce Street shopping center after an object struck the rear gas room at CVS just before 10 p.m., the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department said.

It was then determined that the object severed the high-pressure gas main to the building, the department said.

After arriving fire department units detected a strong odor of gas, readings of gas inside of the building were rapidly climbing, the department said.

Crews were able to secure the severed main, saving the building and potentially the downtown structures around it.

After Con Ed and Yorktown Police arrived, crews forced entry into the adjacent stores and checked for any additional readings. The Yorktown Building Department and Fire Marshal then conducted further investigation, including determined the cause of the main break, which may have been the result of a vehicle backing into the outside of the building.
