The incident began around 9:50 p.m. when a trooper making a routine traffic stop on I-84 in Beacon was alerted that a stolen vehicle had just driven by him by a license plate reader in his vehicle, state police said.

After clearing the traffic stop, Trooper Nigel Barnett, found the stolen Toyota Camry traveling westbound on the Newburgh Beacon Bridge and pulled it over. As he exited his vehicle, the driver of the stolen car, Angel J. Gomez,  24, of the Bronx accelerated and exited I-84 via exit 10N, state police said.

Gomez, travelled on State Route 9W northbound for approximately one mile, then entered the southbound lane on State Route 9W and struck a 1997 Toyota Avalon, operated by Eustaquio D. Soriano, 63, of Newburgh, head-on.

The impact caused the Avalon to enter the northbound lane where it was struck by the 2016 Dodge police car operated by Trooper Barnett. Gomez continued northbound in the southbound lane and struck a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck, operated by Peter Floor Jr., 18, of Marlborough, and a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, operated by 58-year-old William J. Fulgoni, of Milton, before coming to rest, state police said.

Gomez and his passenger, Krystall A. Solivan, 23, jumped out of the Camry and fled on foot. Both subjects were located a short distance from the crash and placed in custody by the Town of Newburgh Police Department. Solivan was later released from police custody and is not facing criminal charges at this time, state police said.

Barnett was transported to Vassar Brothers Hospital where he was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries. Soriano and his passenger were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, state police said.

Gomez was charged with reckless endangerment, assault, criminal possession of stolen property, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, and aggravated unlicensed operation. He is being held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

The State Police from Troop K and F were assisted by the Town of Newburgh Police Department and the City of Newburgh Police Department.
