CARMEL, N.Y. -- A man who was recovered from the Croton Falls Reservoir on Tuesday afternoon has been pronounced dead while another man involved survived, a spokesperson for New York City's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) confirmed. The boat was previously said to have overturned but a DEP official on Wednesday denies that it capsized. Instead, according to the official, the person lost his balance and fell out.
The search took place in a section of the Croton Reservior in the Town of Carmel.
The fire department, which was dispatched at around 2:26 p.m., came into contact with a man who was near the shore, who reported that the other was still in the water, Croton Falls Fire Chief Jason Blauvelt discussed. Dive teams from Mahopac Falls and Yorktown Heights assisted, according to Blauvelt, who added that the man was found about 60 minutes later.
Mutual aid was also provided by the Mahopac Fire Department, Carmel Police, the Putnam County Sherrif's Department, New York State Police, DEP Police and the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Aviation units from the DEP and Westchester County were involved, according to Blauvelt, who confirmed that the man found in the water was transported to Putnam Hospital Center.
The Croton Falls Road causeway, where responders were stationed, was closed Tuesday afternoon.
Names of the men are being withheld pending family notification, according to the DEP spokesperson, who also noted that the boat had a valid tag and the individuals had valid access permits. Neither wore life preservers, according to the spokesman, who also mentioned that preservers were in the boat.
